What on earth can I be doing wrong?
Wow! Printmaking without a press. Now THAT impressed me (no pun intended). So I rented the ccp video on line to see what it was all about. A bargain. No need to buy it and keep something I didn?t know if I was going to want to see again.
What a wealth of information for those just starting out in monoprinting without a press. After finding out what type of plates, inks, and papers to use, I was ready to get to work. Applying ink can be like manipulating paint ? besides the usual brayers, anything to get the color onto the plate works so long as the ink is not too thick or too thin. And a lot of the same techniques to apply ink can also pick it up ? brushes, stencils, mylar overlaps, leaves, stamps, scrapers, sponges, etc.
The artist in me came out when the instructors talked about textures and various designs. And the technician in me (what very little there is) was forced to pay attention to the printing process. After all, what?s the use of doing all that ?work? if you can?t get a good print.
The neat part about monoprinting is making ?ghost? images. The release agent can do wonders. I tried using it and it?s quite amazing. Full of surprises and more delicate than the first print, ghosts are often more painterly and successful.
Drawing with a Sharpie for one or multiple colors works well and, because of the suggestions in the DVD, the problems of inking the right side and removing the Sharpie marks are now solved. The video doesn?t miss a trick ? ideas about registering, dealing with ink applied too heavily, shortcuts to cleaning up, and even how to sign your prints are covered.
In addition, you get options to exercise your own creativity. From stencils to stamps to lint-free cloths and scrapers, you can have a lot of fun. All that without an expensive press!
